Law Review Membership
Students are invited to join the Loyola Law Review through the annual Write-On Competition (this is the same competition the Entertainment Law Review and International Law Review use to select their members).
Eligible students include: day students who have completed their first year and are not on academic probation, evening students who have completed their second year and are not on academic probation, and external transfer students. The Competition begins a few days after Spring exams end and is two weeks long. External transfer students may compete in the Fall version of the competition which begins the first week of classes.
The Write-On Competition is a closed library writing exercise designed to test the writing and bluebook skills of students. Each student wishing to participate is required to write a position paper of 10-12 pages based on the materials provided. These materials include an assigned topic. For example, one assigned topic was to argue whether or not student-initiated school prayer was constitutional.
Participants are required to argue a position based only on the materials provided without outside consultation or reading. Typically, this library of sources includes newspaper articles, law review articles, statutes, case law and statistical information.
Each law review evaluates the quality of the papers based on their own criteria during the summer. A few students will "grade-on" to the law review of their choice. This means that their grades are the primary determinant in their invitation to join. These students are typically the top 3 students from each section. Grade-on students, however, are still required to complete the Competition in good faith and will not know their status until after the competition is finished.
On average, staff members will commit eight to fifteen hours each week for office duties, cite-checking assignments, and satisfying the writing requirement that help refine their legal writing and research skills.
Membership on the Law Review remains a widely recognized symbol of achievement, and we encourage you to join.
