Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review DEVELOPMENTS 2008-2009 |
What is Developments?
Developments is a student-written issue of the Loyola of Los Angeles Law Review that focuses on an emerging area of law. The topic for 2008-2009 will be “Supreme Court Developments in Election Law” and will include articles on campaign finance reform, judicial elections, voter identification, voting rights, and other similar issues. As the Law Review relies upon all of the student articles drafted for the Developments issue to be scholarly work worthy of publication, we are hoping to identify the six most talented writers in the write-on competition for inclusion in this issue. As with all write-on applications, this selection is basedon our grading of the overall application in conjunction with the applicant'slegal research and writing grade but with a particularemphasis onthe overall quality and creativityof the write-on paper.
How is Developments Different?
Developments authors share the same responsibilities as other Law Review staffers, which include cite check assignments, office hours, and participation in production days and other law review events. However, the Developments experience differs in the following ways:
Developments authors are part of a smaller, more collaborative team that includes one developments editor for every two authors, a Chief Developments Editor who reviews all drafts and provides support, and a faculty sponsor who provides substantive guidance. This year, our faculty advisor is Professor Hasen.
Developments authors have the opportunity to rank their choices amongst the six pre-selected topics, but they do not have the same flexibility to choose a topic of their choice.
Developments authors all write a 50-page article, while other staffers have the option to write shorter pieces, such as a Note (40 pages) or two Comments (20 pages).
Developments authors start the research and writing process earlier than other authors, typically at the end of July or the beginning of August.
Why Should I do Developments?
You are virtually guaranteed to be published.
You have the opportunity to work as part of a collaborative team that includes one of Loyola’s most renowned professors.
You have more time to focus on your article because you will know your topic earlier and be provided with initial research assistance from the Developments editors.
How Do I Apply For Developments?
To apply for developments, just check the box on the write-on application. The most important factor in selection will be the write-on submission. Selected authors will be notified in mid-July.
